Eastern Leaf Past Events

Even on hot days we want to talk about trees. We had more trees at the this past weekend's community session! We discuss each tree as a group and talk about the positives, negatives of a tree, and the various options for styling and designing. The trees are looking nicer and nicer.

Kaya is a 27-year-old American who is passionate about bonsai and studied in Japan for five years. He had the opportunity to travel to Osaka, Japan, where he apprenticed under the renowned bonsai Master Keichii Fujikawa, allowing him to immerse himself in bonsai cultivation, care, and design.Kaya’s dedication and passion for bonsai can be seen through his work. Eastern Leaf Community is much more pleasant when the weather is nice. We meet once a month on a Saturday and talk trees. Join us if you're in the area. Bring a tree or just listen to others as we discuss each tree together. It's a great way to practice and learn.

Southern California bonsai masters share their passion for the art form in this exciting annual event that includes exhibits, demonstrations, prize drawings, a bonsai marketplace, and a live auction at 2:30 p.m. each day. Proceeds from the event support the Golden State Bonsai Federation Collection at The Huntington.

The artist Young Choe studied traditional art in Korea before moving to the United States and earning her BS in horticulture. She was active in volunteering at the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum, bringing her knowledge of horticulture and art together to create kusamono. Her passion for the arts took her to Japan to study with the master kusamono artist, Keiko Yamane. With her knowledge and experience, she enjoys conducting workshops and lectures globally to share her knowledge and passion. …

The Eastern Leaf's community sessions are a setting for novice and experienced bonsai enthusiasts to share their knowledge with others and collaborate on improving trees. We recommend bringing your own tools, wire, and raw material tree to work on if available. Jason is available for questions and guidance. We will be holding six Eastern Leaf Community sessions in 2024, weather permitting.

Every year, the Huntington hosts a lunar new year celebration event. This family-friendly event features lion dancers, a mask-changing artist, martial arts demonstrations, music, art and craft demonstrations, and more. This year we had the opportunity to participate in a public tree styling over the course of the weekend.

In 2008, Michael Ryan Bell began digging into his bonsai journey; by 2010, he bought his first quality container. In his attempt to acquire information about this pot and others, he discovered a lack of information available in English.
